Palm Springs…..a girls getaway !

What is it about Palm Springs that makes you want to go back the second you leave? Awww, the weather, that incredibly warm, beautiful weather just makes you want to drink fruity cocktails by the pool all day while handsome pool boys fluff your towels and make sure your umbrellas are situated just right. Relaxing in the heat was something my girlfriends and I were sooo looking forward to a few weeks ago when we all arrived in the desert for our annual getaway together! The four of us have been planning these trips together since our kids were toddlers, and now they are teens and almost driving!

As soon as we got into our rental car we were off to Palm Canyon Drive in downtown Palm Springs. Pretty much the epicenter for all things mid century modern. If you are a fan of this look, which I am, this is your place to find all sorts of fun and unique items for your home!

When we arrived downtown we were hungry and decided to check out a place I had read about called, Cheeky’s. There was a long line (always a good sign) so we put our name on the list and went down the street to visit Trina Turk’s flagship store for a bit…..well, it ended up being a lot longer than a bit!

If you read my about page you know that I like a good bargain and enjoy shopping at Target and TJ Maxx Home Goods, but I do like to splurge sometimes and Trina Turk is the one place where I tend to have a bit of fun! And fun is exactly what I had! I absolutely love her bathing suits and I feel you just can’t put a price tag on a well fitting bathing suit, especially when you are in your late 40’s like I am!! Having a spray tan before trying on a suit is very essential…….I’m not kidding when I say this! It covers up a multitude of sins! Excellent lighting and good music help with the process, too! Oh, and did I mention she was having a sale on suits that day….that helps, too! Her flagship store also has a home decor section, and a Mr. Turk section……you’ve never seen so many well dressed, handsome men, ever! Ladies and gentlemen, I kid you not!

Just to let you know that Cheeky’s for lunch did not disappoint! Great lunch, great service, and above all else, great drinks! In fact, we decided to have a raspberry bellini to celebrate our great finds!

After lunch and shopping on Palm Canyon Dr I really wanted to check out The Riveria Hotel before leaving Palm Springs for the day. My husband and I had stayed there many years ago and I read that it had been remodeled recently so I wanted to check out the scene. The lobby, and lobby bar area, seriously make you feel like you are stepping back into a different era. The place was hopping (hard to tell from these pics, but it was) and the pool scene was very lively with music playing and people of all ages enjoying the pool! We wanted a more quiet vibe and that is why we stayed out of town just a bit, but I can tell you that Palm Springs is where the action is for all things dining and drinking!

It was finally time to check into our home away from home for the long weekend,

The Ritz Carlton in Rancho Mirage.

Upon check in we were greeted with a glass of champagne and smiles all around! I don’t think the champagne greeting happens all the time, but maybe it does!? Maybe we just looked extra friendly or maybe they could tell we really needed a glass of bubbly?! Let’s just say we were very happy to have it and a great way to kick off our weekend!

This is the view you see when you leave the lobby and go out the back door.

And how beautiful is this fire pit area for watching the gorgeous desert sunsets.

This is the adult pool, which I happened to catch early in the morning before it got too busy. With a view like this who would ever want to leave their lounge chair? Well, just in case you don’t want to lounge by the pool all day, which I kind of understand, but not really, the resort offers a daily 1 hour guided walk in the desert and a variety of fun and challenging exercise classes!

We loved our room, which consisted of 2 queen beds and found it to be very comfortable for four ladies, but I think next time we would book a room with a fire pit outside of our room. How nice would it be to have a glass of wine outside at night near the fire. LOVE the warm evenings in Palm Springs and this would be a great place to linger with friends for hours!

Most of our dinners consisted of drinks and appetizers at the resort outside on their lovely patio overlooking the mountains, but we did manage to venture out on a few occasions. We had heard a lot about Workshop Kitchen & Bar in Palm Springs and decided to book that in advance. It was definitely the scene with a very lively bar and a great outdoor patio area, which I should have booked in advance, but we were just lucky to a have a great spot indoors. A very industrial space with concrete tables and stainless steel chairs and very retro lighting. I would say the ambiance and people watching outweighed the food at this restaurant, while it was good, it certainly wasn’t fabulous! I think next time I will pop in for a pre dinner drink and head over to Birba, the sister restaurant of Cheeky’s for dinner ……just  sayin’.

In terms of shopping for clothes, Palm Desert is really the place to go, more specifically, El Paseo.

It’s a lovely street with every type of shop you can imagine….think Rodeo Drive, but not quite as high end.

After we walked around El Paseo Drive for awhile we drove over to Las Casuelas Nuevas in Rancho Mirage for margaritas and mid day appetizers. One of the best mango margaritas I’ve ever had! They have several locations in the Palm Springs area and I highly recommend it if you’re looking for good Mexican food!

If you are really into the architecture of Palm Springs there are many tours that you can take that are either guided or self guided. This is something I would like to do the next time we are in the area along with a jeep tour of the desert! Never enough time, right?!

Where is your favorite place to go away with friends?

I hope this inspires you to plan something soon with your favorite gal pals!

My girlfriends and I completely paid for our entire stay at the Ritz Carlton, including all food and beverages. I simply wanted to share our experience with you at this lovely property.

I hope you stop by again real soon to see what Ms B is up to!
