A postcard from Palm Springs & more

What a fun three days on my annual mother/daughter getaway!  So nice spending time with mom, even though she got a little sick while we were away.  Last year my sister got sick, and this year mom.  We can’t take those girls out of WI, because every time we do, they pick up something interesting!  Maybe it was all of the kale salads and green smoothies that my sister from LA forced on my mom. Hee!

Okay, so on to the fun and better times.

Palm Springs is such an incredibly beautiful place I thought I would share some of my favorite photos from the weekend.  We enjoyed a bit of shopping on El Paseo in Palm Desert, some fun dinners on Palm Canyon Drive, poolside fun, and just good old fashioned girl chat.

The “pink” door.  I’m not quite sure why this door has become so popular, but I decided we had to check it out if we were in the area.  It is a really cool house with beautiful palms in front and that door is better in person than in pictures. I wonder if anyone lives there?  It must drive them crazy having so many visitors!

We took a modern home tour with a company called, The Mod Squad.  Kurt does a fabulous job explaining the history and describing the architectural style of the homes and buildings in Palm Springs.

Kurt drives you around in his air conditioned Mod Squad mini van. The perfect activity for a really hot day.

Love the landscaping!

Birba on Palm Canyon Drive is a fun place for dinner in a lovely outdoor setting.  Palm Springs dining is all about being outdoors and Birba’s beautiful patio is the perfect place to be on a warm evening!

Our home away from home for the weekend.  The Ritz Carlton in Rancho Mirage.  I did a more extensive blog post about this hotel and some other favorites in Palm Springs a few years back here.

The Saguaro Hotel in Palm Springs.

Pronounced….Sa-war-o in case you were wondering.  You have probably seen this iconic hotel in pictures before….maybe?  Our Mod Squad tour departed from this hotel so I had to check out the scene. The colors of the hotel make it super Instagram worthy.  Definitely a hipster crowd with mostly groups in their 20’s – and there were about three college sororities and three fraternities on property when we stopped by.  A DJ was just getting ready to fire up the tunes and it looked like a fun way to spend a warm Sunday afternoon.

Now on to the The Parker Hotel in Palm Springs.  This hotel was so lovely and I had heard so much about the grounds I had to stop by to take some pics.  They don’t allow tours on the weekends so I stopped by on Monday and they were more than happy to let me explore on my own.

For a more extensive review of this fun hotel you can read Kim’s post from Northern California Style here.

This was the lobby of the Parker.

The bougainvillea at this hotel was out of control in a good way!  It was absolutely stunning and it was everywhere!

For me, no trip to Palm Springs is complete without a stop at the iconic Trina Turk store on Palm Canyon Drive.  It is her flagship store and the retro design is something really fun to see.

Like the title said, Palm Springs and more.  Well the “more” is some southern California pics from my recent college trip with my daughter.  We toured three colleges in two days and decided to add one more day to the itinerary to enjoy the So Cal sun.

I had to share this cute diner we had dinner at one night.  I’m sure those of you from Orange County or LA are familiar with this place, but it was new to me.  It is called Ruby’s Diner in Crystal Cove right on the Pacific Coast Highway in Newport Beach.  A long line of cars trying to find parking and a longer line to order, but both lines go fast.  And all was worth waiting for.  We grabbed a couple of seats at the wooden bar overlooking the ocean at sunset.  Seriously a ten million dollar view!

A beautiful new shopping area is slowly opening in Newport Beach called the Lido Marina Village overlooking the Newport Harbor.  It is going to be really nice with Nobu opening very soon.

I wanted to lay down in this cozy spot and take a nap after navigating LA traffic for hours!  How do I always forget how bad it is?!  Thank goodness for Waze!

Pelican Hill Resort in Newport Beach. Great spot and pretty close to everything.

I hope you enjoyed this post about beautiful Southern California.  Palm Springs is always such a lovely  place to visit any time of the year, especially in the spring when the wildflowers are blooming in the desert and the temperatures are perfect.  The big birthday is coming up next week and I’m going to be in one of my favorite places with my family.  Follow me on Instagram for the latest and I will be back soon with a birthday re-cap.

As always, thank you sooo much for stopping by to say hi!

  2. Hi April, boy you covered a lot of ground in a short time! Sounds like it was a fun trip aside from your mom getting sick. Hope she is back to herself. Bob and I like having get aways in Palm Springs – we’ve stayed at some swanky hotels (of course I can’t recall the names of them). I’m glad you did another post…always a good resource to be able to look up the fun spots on your blog. Bob lived in Newport just before I met him so he has a special place in his heart for it. The burgers and shakes at sunset look super yummy! Thanks for sharing 🙂
